How to Store and Handle Timber to Prevent Warping

Timber is a natural product that reacts to its environment. Without proper handling, it can warp, split, or bow before your project even begins. At Auswood Timber & Hardware Pty Ltd, we supplyquality timber products alongsidepractical timber care advice. By following proven storage and handling practices, you protect your materials and set the foundation for a professional finish. Treating timber correctly from day one prevents unnecessary waste and costly repairs.

The Golden Rule: Acclimatisation

Acclimatisation means allowing timber to adjust to the temperature and humidity of its final location before installation. This step reduces the risk of cupping, gaps, or buckling once fitted. To do it correctly, move the timber into the space—whether indoors or under a covered outdoor area—at least 48 to 72 hours before use. During this period, it must be stacked properly with space for air circulation. By taking time to let the timber settle, you help ensure a stable and reliable outcome.

Correct Stacking and Storage Techniques

Stacking timber correctly is essential. Always store timber on a flat, level surface, never directly on soil, grass, or concrete where moisture can seep in. Lay evenly spaced bearers or gluts every 600mm to 900mm, placing the first and last bearers at the very ends of the boards. When stacking, keep the heaviest lengths at the bottom. Insert small, uniform “stickers” between each layer, aligning them directly above the bearers. This maintains even weight distribution and prevents bowing. Finally, place weight on top of the stack to hold everything flat and stable.

On-Site Handling and Protection

Timber should be inspected on delivery for existing damage, then moved immediately to a designated storage area. Sun exposure can cause splitting, while rain leads to swelling and mould. Store timber under a roof or cover it with a waterproof tarp, leaving ventilation so condensation does not build up. For best timber care, carry planks on their edge to avoid bending and never drop or throw them. Proper handling minimises dents, splits and other preventable damage.

Short-Term and Long-Term Storage

For short-term storage, a few days to a week, correct stacking and protection is usually enough. For long-term storage, stability is key. Keep timber in a dry, sheltered location such as a shed or garage. Seal the ends of the boards with wax-based timber care products to slow moisture changes through the end grain. This significantly reduces splitting. Check the stack occasionally to confirm it remains secure, ventilated and free from excess moisture.

Setting Your Project Up for Success

Proper care ensures your materials stay true and ready for use. By acclimatising, stacking, protecting and checking timber regularly, you prevent warping and splitting before they start. These simple steps make a measurable difference to the quality and durability of your finished project.
